FROM THE COUNCIL PRESIDENT “That they many all be one.” That was the theme of the sermon preached at CACCUCC by the Rev. Dr. John Dorhauer, our Conference minister on Sunday, September 13th, as we commissioned our Search and Call Committee at both services of that day, followed by our Fall Celebration Picnic. What a festive day! I personally found the sermon uplifting and inspiring, and felt a sense of joy at being a part of this congregation. Now begins the serious work of searching for our next called minister. The Search and Call Committee members have undertaken an enormous task, and I urge each and every one of us to be supportive of their efforts. First, pray for their diligence and wisdom. Second, advise them of our dreams and visions of the future for our congregation. Third, as they begin the task of forming our Church profile, be diligent in responding to any questions or questionnaires you are asked to address. This is “our” Church; yours and mine. Remember, the Church is “us,” a congregation, not a building we go to. In the Love of Christ, Carol Bogg
Casas Adobes Congregational Church, UCC, ONA Council Minutes - August 25, 2009
Called to order at 6:05 pm by Carol Bogg Attendance: Quorum (see Attendance Sheet) Opening Prayer: Rev. Jeff Barton
Review of Minutes: Stand approved as presented.
Ministers Report, Rev Jeff Barton: Had a good vacation, thank you to all for the time.
Ministers Report, Rev. Marie: Sunday School went well [first day was last Sunday the 23rd]. Fall planning well underway for CE on Sunday, Pastors’ Study and EfM and plans for an Advent Study. Finding new areas of self-care.
Finance/Treasurer’s Report, Jack Dean: Profit and Loss [P&L] shows income vs. expense. Income at $253k for a budget of $279k so we are behind by $26k. Went through expenses. Bottom line show $26k deficit. We will manage the deficit somehow. Discussion. Maybe bulletin and Tidings notes with 3rd Quarter statements.
New Business: Nominating-No new.
Welcomers: Growth and Development Presented by George Gluski-to grow the church and encourage new visitors to feel welcome by introducing them to a member of the congregation, ask them to coffee, show them the campus. Growth and Dev. Cte would like to try to coordinate this. Might re-do the narthex and move the Greeters, use a sign-in sheet, call it the Welcome Team with 4 or 5 people to work on Sunday. Will put something in the Tidings. This is not to overwhelm them, just to invite and welcome them. Will begin in a couple of weeks. Already have volunteers. Will kick-off in October.
4-Way Covenant: Charles Lehman, a member of our church and a Chaplain with St Joseph’s Medical, needs us to vote on a 4-way covenant with him, St. Joseph’s Medical (as a supervisor and employer), Southwest Conference and our Congregation. He is a UCC minister in good standing. This is good policy for us and for all. This is important but perfunctory. Motion made to so move the 4-Way Covenant by Mary Megill, seconded by Jack Dean. Charles Lehman will need to keep the covenant. It gives him a place to belong to rather than to float. He will help us if he is available, gives us accountability and oversight. Ayes have it, with one abstaining. There will be a draft and will be finalized and given to us for vote.
Member Names removed: Howard and Kathleen Page, Ana Holcomb, Allen and Barbara Carson. Just noted and reported to council.
Unfinished: Picnic No coffee fellowship on September 13 but a welcome for John Dorhauer. Volunteers still needed. New: Insurance/Room Use: Report from George Gluski: Has done some research on our current policy and other available companies. SW Conference has a program. These are based on the value or value to rebuild which is at $4 to $4 ½ million. Kevin Norton of Brotherhood Mutual is our current agent. [See attachment] George will keep us posted and get us a recommendation. Room Use Policy-talk about policies. Discussion. List from Personnel handed out and assigned about 10 weeks ago. How to create policy/procedures. Perhaps get samples from other churches or the SW Conference. Motion to affirm that we require insurance from room users beginning Sept 1 and naming church as additional insured on policy. Committees can sponsor groups to cover insurance with our umbrella (will check with insurance). Vote and ayes have it. Motion made to have a new committee or another non-council committee to be responsible for Policies and Procedures. Will discuss this next month, gather some information and defer the motion.
Motion made to dismiss. Carried.
Adjourned at 7:38 pm. The Lord’s Prayer.
The next meeting is scheduled for October 20, 2009 at 6:00 pm.
