Gene Wardle memorial on Friday at 11 AM

Worship this Weekend,

And,  in the update,

A reminder for OGHS and Chile relief

Because this news does not allow a regular Sunday gathering notice,  we are sending this weeks SRE out to you earlier than usual.

With sadness we announce the news of Gene Wardle’s death early on Monday, the 8th of March.  Our prayers are with Corky and her family and all of Gene’s many friends.

A service of worship and thanksgiving for Gene’s life will be held in the Sanctuary at Casas Adobes UCC on Friday, March 12th, at 11 AM.

The family asks that memorial contributions be directed to Interfaith Community Services in lieu of flowers or other tributes.

Saturday @ 5 PM & Sunday @ 8:15 AM and @10:15 AM services this weekend will all mark the 4th  Sunday of Lent.   Jeff will be preaching from the Prodigal Son story in Luke 15, and the sermon is titled “Celebrating Servants”.   Our annual recognition of and appreciation for our Casas Adobes volunteers will be marked.

Chile Earthquake Relief

Worship this Weekend

and  in the Update,  an invitation to share your “20-second Credo”

Last weekend we were all very concerned to learn of the devastating 8.8 magnitude earthquake in the South American nation of Chile.  Once again the United Church of Christ has already responded via our ecumenical partners in Chile and via Church World Service.   CWS is an international and inter-denominational program for response, relief and reconstruction ministries wherever they are needed.   Our primary funding of CWS is via our annual One Great Hour of Sharing offering, scheduled at Casas Adobes UCC this year for March 14 through April 4th.

As we did after the Haitian earthquake, you can make designated gifts to OGHS and CWS by writing a check to Casas Adobes UCC with Chile on the memo line.  And be reminded and assured, your annual contributions to OGHS help to make response and relief resources available without waiting for directed offerings to come on line.  Thus, we will collect our OGHS offerings -- for Haiti, for Chile and for those undesignated -- throughout the month to come until Easter Sunday.

If you wish to make an immediate and direct contribution for the work in Chile, we urge you to go to

 http://www.ucc.org/disaster/earthquake-strikes-chile.html

where donations from credit or debit accounts can be taken.

In every corner of the globe, Church World Service and the United Church of Christ are working with local communities of service and faith to reach out as neighbors to those in times of travail.   CWS folks are at work before we can begin to fund them with new offerings, and they stay at work long after the headlines go from Haiti to Chile and from Chile to what will be next.    Casas Adobes UCC was very generous in the weeks following the earthquake in Haiti, and I know many of you will wish to be generous again now that the news from Chile has come to us so dramatically.  Remember to be generous for the work of all that this years One Great Hour of Sharing will touch.  And, if you are so moved, mark some or all of this years contribution for Haiti or for Chile, as the Spirit moves you.   Thank you.

Saturday @ 5 PM & Sunday @ 8:15 AM and @10:15 AM services this weekend will all mark the 3rd Sunday of Lent.   Communion will be celebrated at all three services.  Jeff will be preaching from Luke 13, and the sermon is titled “ Taking Up Space ”

Barbara Anderson and Rev. Marie Bacchiocchi.”

There is still some space remaining for you to attend and participate in this Jesus Seminar On The Road opportunity just down the road in Sahuarita.   Call 625-1375 to get details from Good Shepherd UCC or check in with Rev. February 4 SRE

SRE  =  Semi Regular Emailing

 February 4, 2010                www.casasadobesucc.org

From Casas Adobes Congregational UCC:

An “Open and Affirming” United Church of Christ faith community in Tucson.

So that you will better be both invited and informed:

Saturday @ 5 PM and Sunday @ 8:15 AM services this weekend will be very much in the manner and style you know and expect here at Casas Adobes UCC

          However –

Sunday @ 10:15 will be our annual Super / Souper Bowl Sunday service!  We will encourage folks to dress in colors or jerseys of favorite sports teams, and to expect a lot of football silliness and fun in our worship service order, and to stay for a pot-luck pre-game meal following the service.

        And –

Members and friends to all three services are most encouraged to bring food contributions to Casas Adobes UCC this weekend that we will deliver to Interfaith Community Services so that the ICS Food Bank can help respond to the deep need of our neighbors.

Jeff will be preaching and sharing thoughts based on lessons from Isaiah 6 and from Luke 5.   The title of both Sunday sermons is “Catch of the Day” but the sermons will be as different as Mike Iaconelli and Larry Fitzgerald.   Communion will be celebrated in February on the 13th and 14th, rather than during this first weekend of the month, which is our more regular practice.

And be sure to plan to join with UCC / CC(DOC) global missionary Mark Behle who will share of his work in Lesotho at both Sunday services and at the Adult Study gathering at 9:15.   And, as usual, join us for our Sunday Coffee and Conversation,  also at 9:15am.

It’s not too late to sign up to give blood this Sunday.   Call Susan Stevens-Whitney in advance or just come healthy and ready to take an open slot at our winter blood drive.

And,  not least even if last,  the first of three information gatherings for those considering membership (or associate membership) with Casas Adobes UCC will also take place between the Sunday services.  Whether you know that you want to be included in one of our membership catagories or not,  you are most welcome and invited to participate in any or all of these sessions,  to be held in the chapel at 9:20 am on February 7th, 21st,  and on March 7th

Casas Adobes UCC has raised and forwarded $3600 in direct special contributions to Haiti in the three weeks since the earthquake.  God Bless You.

Following efforts of previous years, members of more than 50 UCC churches are again picking up their pens and putting their compassion onto paper, urging their Congressional representatives to help Bread for the World alleviate hunger in the United States.
  • Africa area executive to lead OGHS Live segment
